Review: Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 Pencils

Today I’m sharing my review of the Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 “multi-talented pencils” from Timberdoodle.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary set for review from Timberdoodle. All views expressed are my own.

What They Are

The Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 pencils aren’t what I consider pencils. They are made of wood and look like pencils but are as chunky as a toddler-style crayon. Each “pencil” is about 4 inches long, perfect for little hands. But they are so much more than your average beginner crayon.

First, the “pencil lead” is a buttery soft crayon that glides on the paper. Unlike wax crayons, they are water-soluble, which means they can be used as watercolor paints. They can also write on glass and other hard surfaces (like an old-fashioned “grease pencil”) andwipe right off with water.

How We Use Them

I enjoy adult coloring books. I didn’t expect these fat little pencils to work well for that, but I was wrong. I love them. It’s so satisfying to apply the color in broad strokes with soft pencils, but the best part is blending the colors with a wet paintbrush. I was delighted with the results.

Laura had fun using the Stabilo pencils to decorate our back door with a collection of friendly gnomes late last summer. A quick spritz of Windex would take them right off (or even just a wet paper towel), but I’ve enjoyed them so much that I haven’t removed them. Six months later, they still look as vibrant as they did when she first doodled them.

One other use we discovered is that they will even color on skin. While I could be more creative when it comes to face-painting designs, I think this could be a fun activity at a kid’s birthday party or another event.

What’s Included

Timberdoodle carries the 18-piece set of Stabilo Woody 3-in-1 Pencils, which includes ten basic colors (white, blush, purple, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, black), six pastel colors (aqua, coral, lavender, pink, light yellow, light green), and two metallic colors (silver and gold). The set also includes a pencil sharpener and a paintbrush.

Timberdoodle includes this set in the Pre-K curriculum kit, but based on my experience, this set can grow with your child. The versatility of its uses means that it’s great for artists of all ages.
