My Review

One of the most misused Bible quotations I’ve heard in recent years is Jesus’ statement: “Judge not.” I find it especially frustrating when it’s in reference to someone’s lifestyle or obvious bad choices. “We’re not s’posed ta judge!”

You know what else Jesus said in that very same chapter?

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.” –Matthew 7:15-20

What “fruits” will we recognize? The Fruit of the Spirit, of course!

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • patience
  • kindness
  • goodness
  • faithfulness
  • gentleness
  • self-control

Naturally, we all enjoy being around people who display those sweet attributes, but it’s often harder to live by them ourselves in the real-life challenges we face every day.

I want to be more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled. It’s definitely a work in progress over here, so I was excited to have the opportunity to review the Fruit of the Spirit Devotional Journals box set from Crossway.

The set includes nine beautiful booklets with distinctive covers, one for each “fruit,” tucked into a lovely hinged box with a magnetic flap closure. It would make a very special gift for a friend who enjoys journaling and Bible study.

Scriptures are from the ESV, and each booklet includes thoughtful questions and plenty of lined space for journaling your answers and your own thoughts. I am looking forward to going through them fruit by fruit. Maybe I’ll do one fruit a month.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. –Galatians 5:22-23
