Review: Seashell Shore 3D Painting

Our next art review for this season is the Muddies Seashell Shore 3D Textured Sand Art Kit.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary kit for review from Timberdoodle. All views expressed are my own. Laura is the resident artist featured in this review.

Seashell Shore

Did you ever make “sand art” when you were growing up? You know, the kind where you pour layers of colored sand in a bottle? As a kid, I thought that was so cool.

Well, this is not that.

Nor is it a sand sculpture like you might see at a beach sandcastle-building contest. In fact, I wasn’t familiar with this type of sand art at all.

With this technique, you mix sand with paint, then apply it with a palette knife onto a canvas to create a 3-dimensional painting. Let me show you.

What’s Included

The Seashell Shore 3D Textured Sand Art Kit from Muddies includes:

  • a 6″ x 8″ blank canvas
  • a wooden display easel
  • 8 pots of paint
  • 2 paintbrushes
  • a palette knife
  • a small bag of quartz sand
  • glue
  • 19 “accessories” (seashells and pearls)
  • an instruction card with a QR code linking to video instructions

The Process

First, Laura mixed the paint with sand to get the color and texture she wanted for each layer.

She applied the sandy paint with a palette knife, which gives it a natural-looking, wavy surface.

Once the base layer was dry, Laura plastered on the whitecaps, which added even more depth and texture.

As a final touch, she artistically arranged and glued several seashells and pearls across the beach.

My Thoughts

The finished painting makes a lovely display piece for the summer. It would also go great in a beach or lighthouse-themed room.

This was a fun project. The technique was easy but offered enough variety to keep it interesting and allow Laura’s own creativity to shine through.

If you’re looking for an art project you or your teen can do in one sitting and achieve satisfactory, display-worthy results, I highly recommend this “beginner-friendly” sand art kit.
