Game Review: Walls and Warriors

Next up in my series of off-screen entertainment gift ideas for the whole family is Walls and Warriors by Smart Games. As usual, I need to mention that Timberdoodle sent it to me in exchange for my review.

Like many Smart Games, Walls and Warriors is a single-player thinking game. However, it is not so much logic as it is spatial reasoning. I definitely enjoy logic games, but sometimes it’s fun to switch it up with something that doesn’t involve quite so much concentration.

What’s Included

Walls and Warriors comes with a game board, a two-tower castle, 4 wall segments with different configurations, 3 blue knights (the good guys), 4 red knights (the bad guys), and a challenge book packed neatly into a sturdy clam-shell style box.

How to Play

First, you set up the board according to the diagram in the challenge book. We’ll start with Challenge 1 at the Starter level. That seems like a very good place to start, don’t you think?

The first few challenges are set up with two segments of the wall already in place. You just have to figure out where to put the other two segments.

The rule is that the castle towers and all blue knights in play must be completely enclosed within the walls.

The other rule, in later levels when the red knights show up, is that red knights must be outside the walls. Easy peasy? Maybe not so much!

My Thoughts

I took the Walls and Warriors game along on our most recent camping trip. It’s the kind of thing I like to have along to fritter away a half hour or so while we have some down time.

After working through the first few challenges on my own, I managed to convince Lyle to give it a try. I can see now why kids enjoy putting their heads together to solve the puzzles in the single-player thinking games. It was interesting to watch Lyle think through the process, and then when he was stumped for the moment to reach over and try a few maneuvers myself.

The Walls and Warriors challenges are definitely suitable for adult brains as well as kids’! The recommendation is ages 8 to adult. This would be another good one for senior citizens for daily brain exercises.
