Review: To Spark a Match

Today I’m participating in a book tour for To Spark a Match an inspirational Gilded Age historical novel by Jen Turano from Bethany House Publishers. It is Book 2 in The Matchmakers series.

My Review

To Spark a Match is a thoroughly fun read. Adelaide is not much interested in meeting society’s expectations. That’s just as well because she frequently finds herself in situations that mortify her mother. She’s not trying to be inappropriate, but somehow these things just happen to her. Not to mention that she loves books. And cats. Neither of which are all that popular with the “proper” set. This all adds up to the perfect set-up for a plot line reminiscent of My Fair Lady. Can Adelaide manage to present herself as a proper lady long enough to get a husband?

The hero is a “former” intelligence agent which adds an element of espionage and intrigue to the story. Of course, he’s not a matrimonial prospect. He’s just a concerned friend.

By the way, would anyone like to adopt a cat? Adelaide has more than she can handle… and would love to find homes for some of them.

Lots of humor and fun details. A delightful read!

From the Publisher

After five unsuccessful Seasons on the marriage mart, Miss Adelaide Duveen has
resigned herself to the notion that she’s destined to remain a spinster forever–a rather
dismal prospect, but one that will allow her to concentrate on her darling cats and
books. However, when she inadvertently stumbles upon Mr. Gideon Abbott engaged in
a clandestine activity during a dinner party, Adelaide finds herself thrust into a world of
intrigue that resembles the plots in the spy novels she devours.

Former intelligence agent Gideon Abbott feels responsible for Adelaide after society
threatens to banish her because of the distraction she caused to save his investigation.
Hoping to return the favor, he turns to a good friend–and one of high society’s leaders–
to take Adelaide in hand and turn her fashionable. When danger surrounds them and
Adelaide finds herself a target of the criminals in Gideon’s case, the spark of love
between them threatens to be quenched for good–along with their lives.
