Little House Expanded Reading List
As a lifelong fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder I’ve been drawn to any biographies, spin-offs, or other books inspired by the Little House series. Some I’ve collected as I’ve had the opportunity. Others I’ve read from the library.
Here’s what my collection currently looks like.
Below is a list of these books plus others I’ve read, and a few I haven’t yet read but intend to. I’ll mark with a star rating the ones I’ve read so you’ll be able to tell which ones I think are best.
I have not included the abridged, condensed, or otherwise rewritten editions of Laura’s stories. In my opinion the books did not need to be rewritten or re-illustrated. Possibly these newer editions are more politically correct. I realize that’s important to some. I prefer the original stories, realizing that they are indeed fiction.
The only exception would be the beautifully illustrated picture books for young children which came out when my children were small. Each of these books is adapted from a chapter in one of Laura’s books. The illustrations are soft pictures reminiscent of Garth Williams’ style. Here’s a blog post by illustrator Renee Graef, telling how she came to illustrate these books.
As usual, most book links are affiliate links which means I might make a small commission if you click through and end up buying something.

My kids have checked out a few of the My First Little House Books from our library. I need to see how many they have so we can read more of them. And I think I need to add her books to my to-read pile.

Have you ever used the Prairie Primer curriculum?

I haven’t. I almost did once, but then I decided to go a different direction. It looks fun!
