We don’t get very many sunny days in the middle of the winter here in north Idaho. I have to say, the winter sunshine may be the one thing I miss most about living in Denver. When we do have sunny days I try to sit near the window and soak it in. I crave that Vitamin D, you know.
However, there is one winter day when I don’t want to see the sun, and that would be Groundhog Day. Because you know, if the sun is out, the groundhog sees his shadow and that means 6 more weeks of winter.
Of course, I don’t really believe the groundhog predicts the weather, but yesterday was sunny. And we’re having very nasty weather today. 16 degrees and snowing and blowing. *shudder* I hope we don’t have 6 more weeks of this. But I’m afraid we might. This winter has been harsher than usual and winters do tend to be long in this part of the country.
My main coping mechanism for long weeks of stay-inside weather is to escape into a good book. This morning I was browsing the free Kindle book section on Amazon and thought I’d share a few that I found from some of my favorite Christian publishers. Here in southwest Idaho, we are having the same cold, snowy, harsh winter. Seems like we’ve seen the sun and blue sky only about 5 times since the beginning of December.
Several years ago, I made it a winter habit to read Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “The Long Winter.” When I lived in Florida and didn’t get to experience winter, I lived vicariously through that book. This winter, though, I decided to forego my annual reading of that—I am wintered out! I decided to read “The Secret Garden”—and get some sunshine and gardening—instead!
