First Day of Fall

welcomefallWith Labor Day coming at the beginning of September and kids going back to school even before that, it seems like fall starts sooner than it actually does. In Idaho fall days meant shorter daylight hours and the coming winter drabness, so I was never eager to rush the season. Like I mentioned a few weeks ago, I try to savor all the days of summer.

In Colorado it’s a little different. The climate is similar, but there are far more days of sunshine here. We enjoy mostly sunny days all winter long. Even though we’ve been in Colorado going-on-2-years it’s still hard to make that mental shift. And so, when I saw this sign a few weeks ago…

“Are you ready for pumpkin flavored everything?”

…my answer was, “No! I’m not ready! It’s not time. It’s still summer.”

And now, it is time. The first day of fall. Those of you who enjoy pumpkin-flavored everything, please feel free to indulge. With my blessing.

I don’t dislike pumpkin in moderation, but I probably won’t be trying the Pumpkin Seed Tortilla Chips… or the Pumpkin Barbecue Sauce… or the Sparkling Pumpkin Cider (that just sounds wrong!)… or the Toasted Pumpkin Loops cereal.

I will, however, enjoy the Pumpkin Pecan Waffles candle that my daughter gave me and the Pumpkin Spice soap from my friend Jill. I’ve had them for a few weeks but I’ve been saving them until fall actually arrived. I might even indulge in a Pumpkin Spice Latte. But just one.

Happy fall, y’all!

What’s your favorite pumpkin-flavored whatever?

Oh! My kids love pumpkin chocolate-chip muffins, too. In fact, my older daughter makes them and then my younger daughter wants them every morning for breakfast for the next week!

I recently tasted a Starbucks pumpkin spice latté and found it way too sweet. But generally I love all things pumpkin. Too bad I can’t get the easy canned pumpkin here. (Otherwise I would be baking lots of pumpkin stuff).

That’s my opinion of Starbuck’s pumpkin lattes, too. That’s why I would only have one. After that, I would remember that I actually prefer caramel macchiato year ’round!

I do like my PSLs but only my homemade version. The SB ones taste so artificial. Actually Whole Foods makes a good one…

I’m not a big fan of pumpkin. My pumpkin ‘obsession’ is limited to Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin scented candles, roasted pumpkin seeds at Halloween, and a single slice of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving.

My husband, on the other hand, is OBSESSED with pumpkin. The first year we were dating, he ate THREE WHOLE PUMPKIN PIES in a span of about 2 days. Then when we got back from his family thanksgiving, he made enough pumpkin custard to feed 20 people and ate it all by himself. I don’t know how he does it.
